The European Roma Rights Centre is an international public interest law organisation which monitors the rights of Roma and provides legal defence in cases of human rights abuse.
Every single day, 30,000 children are dying as a result of extreme poverty. This year, 2005, we finally have the resources, knowledge and opportunity to end this shameful situation. Join the band of people who are taking action to make poverty history.
Mostar Music Therapy Centre was established after the war to provide music therapy for war traumatised children in the Mostar area. It offers individual sessions over a period of time; also works with children with special needs (for whom there is little provision in Mostar); runs group sessions in a local refugee camp and is involved in a summer camp for 40 special needs children every summer. When I was there last May it was also starting to work in the psychiatric hospital on the west side of the town. It sees about 74 children every week and has a waiting list as long. The testimony of the parents about the effect this work has on the children was immensely moving and made me realise that in working with one child the therapist is also working with the whole family by proxy - the change in the child (in mood, spirit and behaviour) affects the morale of the whole family, enabling them to function more positively. When I was there I went with the team to the refugee camp and experienced the power of this work firsthand . A group of adolescent boys started off their session chaotic, hyperactive and unable to work together and listen to each other. By halfway through the session they were absorbed and contained, finding a psychological peace which is otherwise unavailable to them. The Music Therapy Centre was funded by War Child until earlier this year when then tranche of funding finished and the team have not so far been able to secure on-going funding - they're working on that. In the meantime they are living from hand to mouth. It would be tragic if they had to close their doors, especially at this point as they are hoping to set up a recognised music therapy training in Mostar so that Bosnian therapists can be trained, the work spread throughout Bosnia and the international presence gradually be withdrawn as the Bosnians make the project their own. To try to forestall closure, Darren Abrahams (who was a volunteer at last summer's children's camp) has set up a pledgebank with the aim of quickly getting interim funding. The Pledgebank website has information about the Mostar Music Therapy Centre alongside the pledge form. The pledge has been set rather high (£100) but perhaps if people want to contribute but can't at that level they could find some friends to club together to raise that amount and choose one name to front their pledge.
